The backstage areas of Union Staion were fascinating.

The windows at either end of the Great Hall: These were double with a three-foot space between. At each floor level there was a walkway btween the windows which was constructed of thick glass so there would be minimal interruption of sunlight entering the hall. The windows could be opened completely for cross ventilation.

The vaulted roof was a wonderful construction. From the main floor, a tiny elevator took you to the top level where there were executive offices and access to the roof just below the clerestory windows. This was the route the Divine Child (boy soprano) and crew would use to get the singer into position. From this level a spiral metal stair led to a Rifle Range, constructed when the CN Police was a major professional private police force. A final staircase led to the bridgework between the vaulted ceiling and the actual peaked roof. A series of trusses spanned the width of the Hall . There were openings in the vaulted ceiling itself through which we were able to feed cables that would allow us to winch the inverted pyramid into place.

There were two cantilevered platforms; one for Hermes which projected from the centre of the middle opening on the North wall [see next page] and one for The Divine Child which was built into the open clerestory window below the ceiling and 80 feet above the floor.
