Union StationWe contacted the three levels of administrative bureaucracy that controls Union Station - CN, ? ? - and in spite of the complexity of the negotiations, it appeared that it might actually be feasible. We began by imagining an arrival by train but that turned out to be impractical so we started with the underground parking garage. From there, the audience would be led throuigh a variety of underground passages including the arrival platforms and eventually end up in the public areas of the Station. As the piece was designed to begin at midnight, this was in fact feasible. The subterranean halls andpassages were ideal and needed little or no decor or masking. As we got into the arrival area on the lower floor, hiding the advertising, store signs, train signs etc. began to look like a major concern. We examined ways of using some of the areas to our advantage - such as a video introduction to alchemy in the area with the arrival/departure monitors. This would cover the initial scenes from the work before moving the audience upstairs to the Great Hall for the body of the piece. |
